A worked example
Take a Monday class in Term 1 2027. The term runs from Wed 3 Feb to Fri 9 Apr, which holds 9 Mondays. Waitangi Day (Mon 8 Feb) and Easter Monday (Mon 29 Mar) fall on a Monday, so the class runs 7 times.
A Friday class in the same term runs 9 times, after Good Friday (Fri 26 Mar). In Taranaki, Taranaki Anniversary Day (Mon 8 Mar) is a Monday too, so the Monday class there runs 6 times.
So a term fee is the lesson price times the lessons in that term, for your day and your region. Two classes in the same term can be charged for a different number of weeks.
New Zealand school term dates
Term 1 shows the latest day state schools may open, and Term 4 the last day they may stay open. Each school chooses its own days within that.

Where the dates come from
School terms come from the Ministry of Education's notice of school term dates in the New Zealand Gazette. Public holidays and anniversary days come from Employment New Zealand's list of public holidays and anniversary dates. We copy them by hand and add each new year once both are published.
Questions people ask.
- When are the 2027 school terms in New Zealand?
- Term 1 runs from Wed 3 Feb to Fri 9 Apr; Term 2 runs from Tue 27 Apr to Fri 2 Jul; Term 3 runs from Mon 19 Jul to Fri 24 Sep; and Term 4 runs from Mon 11 Oct to Fri 17 Dec. Term 1's date is the latest a state school may open, and Term 4's the last day it may stay open, so check with your local schools.
- Do all schools start and finish on the same day?
- No. The Ministry of Education sets the latest day a state school may open in Term 1 and the last day it may stay open in Term 4. Each school picks its own days within that, so some start a few days earlier or finish a few days sooner.
- What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?
- Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas, Boxing Day and the two New Year holidays move to the next weekday for anyone who doesn't usually work that weekend day. If you teach on that Saturday or Sunday, the holiday is yours on the weekend day. The counter takes both days off, so tick the weekend day back on if you're open.
- How do I charge a student who joins partway through a term?
- Put their first lesson date in "Starting from". The counter gives the lessons from that date on, and their fee when you add a price per lesson.
